Overcoming Barriers to Success
Overcoming Barriers to Success (OBS) is a program for young adults, adults, and seniors with physical, emotional, or intellectual disabilities in Little Village and the surrounding communities of Chicago. The program helps aid individuals with the necessary skill sets needed to be able to continue living an independent life. In 2008, there were 3,511 people with disabilities in the South Lawndale and Pilsen area, 58% of whom have not had a job in the last five years or have never had a job. Only 13% of disabled people in the community are working full-time. UP offers vocational training that includes English and Computer literacy, higher education, and Job Readiness Training. Through the Vocational Training we help each individual with the skills and self-confidence to succeed in the workplace and to enrich their community.
This program was made possible by support from the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Division of Rehabilitation Services.
