PROGRAMS

Universidad Popular focuses on helping the community by providing programs such as the ones listed below.
Come be a part of the experience and help our community prosper through learning.

facebook Learning to Succeed (LETOS)
(LETOS) is an adult education program that offers English as a second language. Every year, LETOS serves an average of 300 students, ranging from ages 18 to 80. We offer a variety of classes of different levels in the morning and evening.

Unlike traditional English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, This program uses language skills as a tool to teach immigrants practical skills such as how to do their tax returns, use a computer, register to vote, and take public transportation. Facilitators use field trips to expose immigrants to museums, libraries, aldermanic proceedings and neighborhood events. In summary, (LETOS) helps immigrant adults acclimate to their new surroundings and culture, and empower them to participate in United States society. In addition to English classes, UP also offers Mejorando Escritura y Lectura (MELE) for community members who do not know how to read or write in their native language (Spanish).

Facilitators and peer tutors assist participants in becoming literate in Spanish, and transitioning to English language classes. With LETOS, we believe that your success is more certain.

facebook Digital Literacy Program (DILIPRO)
The Digital Literacy Program (DILIPRO) is the technology class at UP. Our participants get to learn about computer hardware and its basic uses. Participants learn how to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Publisher, Power Point and Internet basic skills. Students also create resumes, letters, banners, flyers, business cards, Power Point presentations, Excel budgets, among others.

Advanced Students may join the UP Squad, where they learn how to disassemble computers, install new parts, and repair hardware and software. Community residents bring malfunctioning computers to the UP Squad; the Squad fixes 3-5 computers per week. UP Squad offers the following services: pickup and delivery, diagnostic, tune up, anti-virus configuration, data bank-up/transfer, software installation, install operating system, hardware install, hard drive install, personal tutoring, and consulting. Don't forget to ask about our new installment to the (DILIPRO) program. We offer night classes that teach Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash. Coding languages that are also taught at night are HTML and CSS. Great for students who need to sharpen their skills or anybody who would like to improve their resumes.

facebook Youth Program (UPRISING)
(UPRISING) is UP's youth after school program which aims at increasing students' academic performance and enriching their bi-cultural identity. UPRISING was developed in response to the call for youth involvement in the communities currently served by UP. We initiated in October of 2010 with the mission of fostering a positive and self-empowering learning space for youth. Our approach also seeks to raise awareness among participants about some of the most pressing issues their communities face.

The vision for the program was designed by teenagers from the neighborhood who wanted an environment where they could express themselves and engage their community freely. As are all other programs at UP, UPRISING is founded on the model of popular education conceived by the social theorist and educator, Paulo Freire. The aim of the youth program is to create a holistic approach to youth leadership and development that serves as a gateway to higher education. The program uses liberating and expressive mediums such as yoga, creative writing, dance, multi-media, and fine art to address the identity-formation and socio-emotional needs of young people.

facebook Health Literacy Initiative (HEALIN)
Our (HEALIN) program aims to improve residents' quality of life through nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction.
We offer healthy cooking, yoga, dance, aerobics, nutrition seminars, and guitar classes, in addition to a competitive men´s soccer team. We also periodically host health-related seminars on topics such as: obesity, asthma, respiratory illnesses, gardening, organic food, preventive medicine, drug abuse, alcoholism, and STIs. It is HEALIN's mission to built strong and healthy individuals, families and communities.

facebook Overcoming Barriers to Success (OBS)
Overcoming Barriers to Success (OBS) is a program for young adults, adults, and seniors with physical, emotional, or intellectual disabilities in Little Village and the surrounding communities of Chicago. The program helps aid individuals with the necessary skill sets needed to be able to continue living an independent life. In 2008, there were 3,511 people with disabilities in the South Lawndale and Pilsen area, 58% of whom have not had a job in the last five years or have never had a job. Only 13% of disabled people in the community are working full-time. UP offers vocational training that includes English and Computer literacy, higher education, and Job Readiness Training. Through the Vocational Training we help each individual with the skills and self-confidence to succeed in the workplace and to enrich their community.

This program was made possible by support from the Illinois Department of Human Services' Division of Rehabilitation Services.
